Ethiopia to make birthplace of emperor Tewodros ii a tourist destination

((Mar 24 (BERNAMA-NNN-ENA))--Preparations are underway to make the birthplace of Emperor Tewodros II or Kassa Hailu a tourist destination with all the infrastructural and service provisions.

His birth place in Qwara in northwestern Amhara Region (Province) will accommodate all the necessary facilities for tourists, including accommodation and other services.

Emperor Tewodros II was one of the most magnificent Ethiopian leaders and was the founder of modern Ethiopia. He was born in 1818 and died in April 1868 by committing suicide in refusal to surrender to the British invasion force.

Tewodros II was the first to establish a professional army in Ethiopia and sought the establishment of principles that governors and judges must be salaried appointees. He worked to abolish the feudal system and create a new nobility based on meritocracy, opened a new era and ended the old feudal one.

His rule is often placed as the beginning of modern Ethiopia, ending the decentralized "Zemene Mesafint", era of the Princes. The Cultural and Tourism Bureau of Amhara Regional State, in collaboration with three universities in the region, is commemorating the 150th anniversary of his death this year.
