4,500 died in traffic accidents in Ethiopia in a year

(ADDIS ABABA, Aug. 14 (Xinhua))--Traffic accidents during the Ethiopian Fiscal Year 2016/17 that ended on July 8, has led to the deaths of 4500 people.

The figure was given by Kassahun Hailemariam Director General of Ethiopia Federal Transport Authority (FTA) on Monday adding that the number of dead in traffic accidents in Ethiopia during this EFY was 4.4 percent lower than the same period last year.

Traffic safety activities undertaken by FTA were credited with the drop in traffic accident fatalities during 2016/17 EFY, reversing a trend in recent years that had seen traffic accident fatalities increase by an average of 10 percent annually.

The Authority is also toughening driving license regulations and is digitizing Ethiopia's transport regulation system at a cost of 95 million US dollars.

However Hailemariam admitted that traffic accident fatalities in Ethiopia are still very high with lack of coordination between regional states and the federal government on issuance of a standard driving license being part of the problem. Read more from Xinhua »
