Ethiopia Fast Developing Into Apparel Hub

(July 18 (BERNAMA-NNN-ENA))--Ethiopia is fast developing into a dynamic apparel-sourcing hub as low labor costs lure international clothing makers to the Horn of Africa nation, according to a report in japan\'s Nikkei Asian Review magazine.

Manufacturers from China, the Republic of Korea (ROK), India and other countries have opened new plants in Ethiopia, Africa\'s second most populous nation, while a growing number of European and United States brands are sourcing garments there, the report notes.

 A significant factor in Ethiopia's emergence on the clothing scene is the opening of a new railway line from the capital, Addis Ababa, to the port in neighbouring Djibouti, located on the Arabian Sea. The railway will facilitate transportation of goods from landlocked Ethiopia's industrial areas, like the Bole Lemi Industrial Park, an hour's drive from Addis.

 Opened in 2015, the sprawling 150-hectare park is bustling with Chinese, Taiwanese and Korean production facilities, conveniently clustering factories for textiles, apparel products and leather shoes in one area. At a factory operated by Shin Textile Solutions, an ROK company, workers sit at long rows of machines sewing mainly sportswear, the magazine writes.
