Ethiopian man dies jumping from GWB as police try to talk him to safety

(May 15, 2015, (New Jersey))--A man jumped from the George Washington Bridge on Wednesday as a Port Authority police commander tried to talk him away from the railing, officials said.

An N.J. State Police boat recovered the man's body shortly after he jumped around 1:15 p.m., according to Port Authority police spokesman Joe Pentangelo. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Port Authority police Capt. Ron Shindel, who commands officers at the bridge, talked to the man for about 30 minutes as he stood outside the walkway railing, the spokesman added.

Without warning, the man plunged from the crossing. The man was in his 30s and had an Ethiopian passport, Pentangelo said. His name was not immediately released. Read more from NJ »
