Egypt President Sisi to fly to Ethiopia to resolve differences over Renaissance Dam

(Mar 19, 2015, (Cairo))--President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is flying to the Ethiopian capital Addis Abeba on Monday to resolve the remaining differences over the Renaissance Dam, before the signing of the “Declaration of Principles” framework agreement in Khartoum.

The draft agreement has been amended to ensure Egypt’s historical rights to 55.5 billion cubic meters of Nile water. Additional amendments also reduced the dam’s 74 billion cubic meter storage capacity.

Sources said the draft proposed binding mechanisms for the three countries, obliging them to implement the findings of the international consultancies that will soon be announced.

Former Sudanese Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Kamal Ali Mohamed, said in a statement on Wednesday that the current storage capacity would directly cause as many as 11 different damages to Khartoum. “The intervention of the presidents came late, and Sudan’s position was confusing,” he said.
