Police: Mentally ill woman throws baby from 2nd story window

(July 08, 2014, (LYNNWOOD, Wash.))--A Lynnwood woman who may suffer from mental illness is accused of throwing her year-old nephew out of a second story window last week. Police were called to the 14600 block of Highway 99 last Thursday evening after a shop owner encountered a woman who appeared to be having some sort of problem.

A Snohomish County Sheriff's deputy arrived on scene and found the shop owner talking to a woman identified as 38-year-old Betha Kebede. Kebede, who is Ethiopian and speaks little English, told the deputy "they are trying to kill or hurt" her, without elaborating on who "they" are.

The deputy believed Kebede was having some sort of mental health issue and called for medical aid. As they were waiting, the deputy said Kebede said something about throwing her nephew out of the house, according to court documents.

The deputy assumed she was speaking about an adult, but he soon noticed medics had been called to a nearby house to treat an infant who had reportedly fallen out of a second story window and sustained serious injuries. Kebede told the deputy that was the house she had just left, and where she had "thrown the baby" out of the window, according to court papers.

When medics arrived at the nearby house, they found a 1-year-old boy with abrasions on his face, a bloody mouth, bloody nose and "obvious cranium swelling." The boy was rushed to Harborview Medical Center for treatment. Read more from  Komo News »
