Ethiopia, US To Collaborate On Horn Of Africa, Continental Issues

(ADDIS ABABA, Jan 31 (NNN-ENA)--Ethiopia and the United States have confirmed they will collaborate on issues related to the Horn of Africa and continental affairs.

The agreement came during discussions here Wednesday between Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn and visiting US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Johnnie Carson. During the meeting, they confirmed that the two countries would work together in efforts to maintain peace and security in Africa, especially in East Africa.

Both officials said efforts would be exerted to improve relations particularly between Sudan and South Sudan. Hailemariam briefed Carson on efforts being undertaken by Ethiopia to finalise preparations to host the 2013 African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) Forum.

The AGOA is a US legislation approved in May 2000 to assist the economies of sub-Saharan Africa and to improve economic relations between the US and the region.

Carson lauded Ethiopia's contribution to maintaining peace and stability in neighbouring countries, particularly in Sudan and South Sudan and also voiced appreciation for the efforts of the African Union (AU) to maintain peace and stability in Mali. Diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and the US date back to more than 100 years.
